Union women’s basketball rolls in 98-51 win

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 98-51 win over Fisk University Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 4-0 on the season, while Fisk dropped to 1-5 overall. 

After scoreless first two minutes of play, Union jumped out to a 7-0 lead. Fisk stopped the run with a bucket but back-to-back 3-pointers from Union's Kelsey Risner put Union up 13-2 with 5:58 left in the first quarter. Another basket by Fisk preceded back-to-back 3-pointers from Union's Chelsea Bodiford and Union led 19-4. Union continued the run, scoring 15 straight points to lead 28-4 with 1:29 left in the quarter. The first quarter ended with Union leading 32-8. 

Union continued to make shots int the second quarter. Union outscored Fisk 26-13 in the quarter, extending their lead to 58-21 at halftime. Union shot 67 percent from the field including 62 percent (8-13) from 3-point range in the first half. Tiara Caldwell led all scorers with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting in the first 20 minutes. 

The third quarter was more of the same with Union's hot shooting continuing. Union outscored Fisk in the third quarter 30-18, extending their lead to 88-39. The 18 points by Fisk was their best quarter of play on the night. 

Neither team showed much offensively in the fourth quarter with Fisk outscoring Union 12-10 to set the final score at 98-51. 

Bodiford led five Union players in double figures with a game-high 20 points, going 6-of-7 from 3-point range. Caldwell finished with a double-double and her Union career high of 17 points and 12 rebounds. Kelsey Risner finished with 13 points, including 4-of-4 from long range. Jada Perkins finished with 12 points and seven assists, while Jada Smith added 10 points and nine assists. Union shot 54 percent from the field, 54 percent (15-28) from long range and 73 percent (11-15) from the free throw line. 

Fisk was led by Emani Mhoon with 12 points and Kimetrice Cox with 10 points. Fish shot 29 percent from the field, 13 percent (3-23) from long range and 80 percent (8-10) from the free throw line. 

Up next for Union will be two games in the Union Thanksgiving Classic, November 27 and 28.
