Union back at top of Gulf South standings with 94-75 win over Lee

JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University men's basketball team moved into a five-way tie atop the Gulf South Conference standings after beating Lee University 94-75. With the win, Union improved to 8-4 in GSC play and 14-4 overall, while Lee fell to 9-8 overall and 4-8 in conference play.

After taking their first conference loss of the season at Lee earlier in the year, the Bulldogs were able to come out hot against the Flames Thursday. Union shot 58.6 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from behind the arc and hit 9-of-10 free throws in the first half to go into the locker room leading 49-35. Union held the lead for the majority of the first half with Lee's last lead coming with 12:22 left in the half.

Union kept that pace throughout the second half by not allowing the Flames to reclaim the lead for the rest of the game. Union extended the lead to as many as 23 points with 2:51 left in the game.

The win came with strong offensive performances from Marterrace Brock and Corieon Pearson. Brock had his second 30-plus point game of the season recording a career-high 31 points and adding five rebounds. Pearson added 28 points and shot 11-15 from the field and hit 4-of-6 3-pointers. Roy Bullock and Jordan Montgomery added nine points each.

The Bulldogs shot 54.0% from the field and 40.9% from behind the arc, while hitting 89.5% from the free throw line in the game.

Lee was led by Cory Billingsley and Jervon Johnson each had 11 points on the night, and Stemond Ford added 10 and six assists. Lee shot 50.8% from the field, but only 27.3% in 3-pointers.

Union will take on Shorter University at home on Saturday, January 24, at 4:00 p.m. Shorter is coming off of a 31 point win at Christian Brothers Thursday night and is riding two game winning streak.
