JACKSON, Tenn.- The Union University men's soccer team lost a close match to Cumberland (Tenn.) University Tuesday night by the score of 2-1. Union fell to 1-3 on the season, while Cumberland improved to 3-4-1.
The first half was uneventful for both sides as they entered halftime tied at zero with only three shots combined from both teams.
The action kicked up early in the second half with a goal for Cumberland coming in the 50
th minute off of the foot of Patrick Carr on the corner kick from Josh Armstrong.
Union was quick to strike back in the 53
rd minute when
Alex Pratt sprinted up the middle of the field past two defenders and easily put it in the bottom left hand corner of the goal.
Lucas Lopes earned the assist on the play.
The winning goal from Cumberland came in the 73
rd minute of play from Marty Owens off of the pass from Armstrong who earned his second assist of the game.
Both teams played a very physical game and racked up a total of 42 fouls in the contest. Cumberland also outshot Union 10-7 on the night.
Taylor Smith earned four saves in his 90 minutes of work in the loss, while Ian Hamilton of Cumberland also had four saves in the win.
Next up for Union will be two conference games this weekend. First, they travel to West Florida Friday, September 26
th and then on to Spring Hill (Ala.) College Sunday, September 28
th.
