Box Score 2 SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Union University volleyball team lost a pair of matches Saturday in the final day of the Drury University Classic. Union fell to St. Cloud State (Minn.) 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-22) in the morning match. Union then led Arkansas Tech University 2-0 before falling 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-18, 25-17, 15-12). Union is now 1-3 on the season. Arkansas Tech is 2-2, while St. Cloud is 3-1.
Union split their two matches Friday, falling 3-0 to Northern State (S.D.) University and defeating host Drury 3-0.
In the first match again St. Cloud, the sets were back and forth for most of the way. In the first set, the score was tied seven times with five lead changes. At one point, Union rattled off six straight points to lead 15-12. However, St. Cloud responded to win 25-18. In the second set, Union led 7-2 and again 11-9. But St. Cloud posted a 7-0 run to regain control on their way to the 25-17 win. In the third and final set, there were nine ties and four lead changes. With the set tied at 20-20, St. Cloud outscored Union 5-2 to take the match. Union was led by
Kristin Cook and
Deja Moorer with eight kills each.
Lydia Wright led with 26 assists,
Elise Seufert led with 14 digs, while
Savannah Hughes and Cook led with two blocks each.
In the final match versus Arkansas Tech, the sets were all very close with a total of 37 ties and 21 lead changes over the five sets. The first set alone featured 15 ties and seven lead changes. With the first set tied at 22-22, Union scored three of the next four points to take a 1-0 lead. In the second set, Union led 20-18 when a 4-0 run propelled the Lady Bulldogs to take the set and a 2-0 lead. In the third set, Union led 17-16, but Arkansas Tech rallied back to stay alive, closing out the set with a 9-1 run. Set number four was close for a while with Union leading 11-10. However, a 7-0 run inside a 12-2 stretch helped Arkansas Tech tie the match at 2-2. In the final set, Union dominated early and led 12-8, just three points away from a win. But again a 7-0 run to close out the set gave Arkansas Tech the 3-2 win. Union was led by Hughes with 12 kills and Cook with 10 kills. Wright led with 31 assists,
Morgan Morfe led with three aces, Seufert led with 18 digs, and
Mallory Baker and Moorer led with five blocks.
Up next for Union will be their first home match of the season, Tuesday, September 10 at 7:00 p.m. versus Harding (Ark. ) University.
