CLINTON, Miss. - The Union University volleyball team lost 3-0 (12-25, 15-25, 18-25) to Mississippi Christian University Tuesday night at A.E. Wood Coliseum. Union dropped to 5-21 overall and 1-14 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi Christian improved to 10-16 overall and 7-7 in conference play.
The opening set remained close through the early points. Union pulled within one at 9-8 before Mississippi Christian began to create separation. The hosts used several kills and Union attack errors to extend their lead and take the set 25-12.
The teams traded points throughout the beginning of the second set. Union remained within one at 11-10, but Mississippi Christian took control during the middle of the set. The Choctaws closed the set on a strong run to win 25-15 and take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Union continued to battle in the third set. After Mississippi Christian built a 21-14 advantage, the Lady Bulldogs responded late. Sam McHale and Elizabeth Gilbert recorded kills, while Sarah-Kate Savage added a service ace to bring Union within six at 24-18. Mississippi Christian scored the next point to win the set 25-18 and complete the sweep.
Gilbert and Carly Edwards led Union with four kills apiece, while Sydney Davis added three. McHale recorded 10 assists, and Isabella Messer led the Lady Bulldogs with eight digs. Edwards finished with six digs, while Gilbert added five.
Union finished with 16 kills, four service aces, two blocks, 13 assists and 30 digs. Mississippi Christian recorded 35 kills, four aces, seven blocks, 28 assists and 41 digs.
Union returns to action Friday, Oct. 30, at Valdosta State.
