JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team dropped a back-and-forth five-set match to Shorter (Ga.) University, 3-2 (18-25, 25-14, 25-16, 23-25, 15-7). Union fell to 4-14 on the season and 0-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter improved to 7-5 overall and 3-3 in league play.
Union jumped out early with a 25-18 first set victory. Union led for the entire set and held their largest lead at 24-15 before taking the set.
In the second set, Shorter jumped out to a 12-3 lead and coasted to the easy 25-14 win. Shorter maintained the momentum in the third set, jumping out to a 14-5 lead before winning 25-16.
In the fourth set that featured five ties and three lead changes. Shorter led 16-9 and looked to be coasting to a match victory. But Union fought back with a 7-2 run to cut the deficit to just 19-16. Union and Shorter swapped the nest four points as Union trailed 21-18. Union then scored five of the next seven points to tie the match at 23-23. Union closed the match out by scoring the last four points to even the match at 2-2.
The fifth set was close early with the points all even at 5-5. But Shorter rolled off a 6-0 run to lead 11-5. Then the Lady Hawks scored four of the last seven points to seal the match.
Union was led by
Abbey Wainwright with 13 kills and
Deja Moorer with 11 kills.
Lydia Wright led with 37 assists,
Elise Seufert had the team's only ace and led with 27 digs, while
Mallory Baker and
McKenna Carter led with three blocks.
Shorter was led by Jasmine Crook with 12 kills, while Elizabeth Dowd and Erica Baker added 10 kills each. Cheyenne Frady led with 25 assists, while Dena Pierce added 22 assists. Crook led with three aces, Tanequa Whitman led with 25 digs, and Baker led with five blocks.
Up next for Union will be the third of four straight home matches when the Lady Bulldogs host Valdosta State (Ga.) Friday, October 11 at 7:00 p.m.
