JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University volleyball team dropped their first of four straight home matches Friday evening to Lee University, 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-18). Union fell to 4-13 on the season and 0-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee improved to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Lee jumped out early in the first set 7-2 before Union came back to tie the set at 7-7. The first set featured nine ties and four lead changes. The set was tied 14-14 when Lee posted five straight points as a part of a 10-1 run to lead 24-15, before taking the set 25-17.
In the second set, Lee led for the entire match and had three different 4-0 runs in the set. Lee led 14-7 before Union cut the deficit to 14-12 and then 18-17. However, Lee closed out the set with an 7-2 run to win 25-19.
In the third set, Union led 4-2 and Lee rallied to tie the set at 5-5 and again at 6-6. Lee then posted a 5-1 run to take charge. Union pulled to as close at 21-18 before Lee closed out the set and match with four straight points.
Union was led by
Mallory Baker and
Abbey Wainwright with seven kills each.
Hannah Huguley led with 14 assists,
Elise Seufert led with 12 digs, and
McKenna Carter led with four blocks.
Lee was led by Patty Orozco and Lauren Williams with nine kills each. Sarah Davis led with 16 assists, Libby Peigen led with three aces, Paula Martins led with 14 digs and three blocks.
Up next for Union will be the second of four straight home matches. Union hosts GSC foe Shorter (Ga.) Saturday, October 5 at 1:00 p.m.
