FLORENCE, Ala. – The Union University volleyball team fell 3-2 (25-21, 25-23, 20-25, 18-25, 15-13) at the University of North Alabama Tuesday night. Union dropped to 6-25 on the season and 2-7 in the Gulf South Conference. North Alabama improved to 5-12 overall and 3-6 in league play.
Union's two match winning streak, both in GSC matches, came to an end with the narrow defeat. This past weekend, Union knocked off the second place team in the lead, Valdosta State (Ga.) 3-0 and fourth place West Georgia 3-2.
Union fell behind early, dropping the first two sets. Union then responded by winning the next two sets to tie the match. North Alabama jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth set. Union answered with a 6-0 run to lead 7-4. North Alabama tied the match at 8-8 and then again at 9-9. The home Lions took the lead for good at 11-10 and led 14-12. Union cut the deficit to one point at 14-13, but lost the next point to drop the match.
Union was led by
Abbey Wainwright with 13 kills and
Hannah Huguley with 12 kills.
Lydia Wright led with 38 assists,
Elise Seufert led with 23 digs, while
McKenna Carter and
Deja Moorer led with two blocks.
North Alabama was led by Megan Gorey with 16 kills and Jessi Blackstock with 15 kills. Hope Rayburn led with 42 assists, Shantel Federick led with 24 digs, and Hannah Schorr led with six blocks.
Up next for Union will be a second straight road conference match, Tuesday, October 22 at Christian Brothers (Tenn.).
