Box Score 2 JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University soccer teams opened their 2012 season with a pair of wins Friday night at the Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union's women defeated Belhaven (Miss.) University 1-0, followed by a 2-0 victory for the men over Ouachita Baptist (Ark.) University 2-0. The games were a part of the
Union University Soccer Classic featuring five teams from four states.
These two victories for Union kicked off the year-2 candidacy season in the NCAA membership process for the Bulldog athletic program.
In head coach
Isaac Brooks' first game patrolling the sidelines, Union put him in the victory column. Union's women needed just one goal in the win thanks to a defensive effort that allowed just nine total shots.
Emily Waggoner recorded four saves in the shutout. Union's lone goal was scored by Stephanie King in the 12
th minute of play, assisted by
Whitney Kramer. Union managed just 11 total shots in the game, with nine coming in the second half.
The men's game was also a defensive struggle with Union and Ouachita Baptist combining for 20 shots, 11 by Union. Union scored a goal in each half. Their first goal came just two minutes into play when
Diego Santos scored on a breakaway. Union added a final goal in the 48
th minute when
Guilherme Reis found the back of the net.
Matt Kesler recorded the shutout for Union, recording five saves in the win.
In other action in the classic, Missouri Baptist defeated Milligan (Tenn.) 3-0 in the first women's game of the day. Then Missouri Baptist topped Milligan's men in their game 3-1.
Saturday features Milligan versus Belhaven women at 1:00 p.m. and Milligan versus Ouachita Baptist men at 3:00 p.m. Then Union's women face Missouri Baptist at 5:00 p.m., followed by Union and Missouri Baptist men at 7:00 p.m.
