JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 5-1 victory over Mission University Wednesday afternoon at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union improved to 4-5 on the season, while Mission dropped to 1-6-1 on the year.
Union waisted no time getting on the board with a goal from
Ashanie Kennedy in the eighth minute of play, assisted by
Lewis Harding. Just four minutes later,
Freddie Westfall scored the first of his three goals in the match, assisted by
George McDonnell.
The Bulldogs got three more goals in the first half, coming from from the same two players. Kennedy scored his second goal of the match in the 27th minute, assisted by Harding once again. Westfall scored twice more in the 32nd and 36th minutes of play, two more assists from McDonnell.
Union led 5-0 at the half.
All five goals and all five assists came from just four players for Union. All of Westfall's three goals came from headers from the 6-foot-3 defender.
Union outshot Mission 22-5 in the match, including 9-1 in shots on goal. Mission managed a late goal in the 80th minute to avoid the shutout when Nevaun Lindo broke away and scored unassisted.
Kennedy led Union with four shots.
Patrick Schott played a clean first half in goal, allowing no goals with no saves.
Joshua Powell played 24 minutes in goal to start the second half, allowing no goals with no saves, while
Connor Goin played the last 21 minutes, allowing Missions lone goal.

Today was Union's final non-conference match of the regular season and have six GSC matches remaining before postseason. Up next is a key GSC matchup Saturday, October 3 at home versus Lee University at 3:30 p.m. Currently, Union is in sixth place in the league, while Lee sits in third place.
