CLEVELAND, Miss. – The Union University men's soccer team earned its first Gulf South Conference victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Delta State University on Wednesday.
Decker Burns opened the scoring in the 24th minute off an assist from Solomon Pela. Ashanie Kennedy doubled Union's lead in the 33rd minute when he scored off an assist from Freddie Westfall.
Union carried its 2-0 advantage into halftime. Goalkeeper Patrick Schott helped protect the lead by making two saves during the opening half.
Delta State cut Union's lead to 2-1 in the 55th minute. The Statesmen continued to apply pressure, but Schott and the Bulldogs' defense kept them scoreless for the remainder of the match. Schott made three saves during the second half, including one in the 84th minute, to secure the victory.
Kennedy led Union with four shots, including one on goal. Burns scored on his only shot of the match. The Bulldogs finished with seven shots, including three on goal, and four corner kicks.
Schott played all 90 minutes and finished with five saves.
Union improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in GSC play.
The Bulldogs will continue conference play at home Saturday, Sept. 19, against Spring Hill College at 7:30 p.m. at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex.
