HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University baseball team posted a series win at the University of Alabama in Huntsville. Union split the doubleheader Friday, winning 16-15 in game one, then falling 15-4 in game two. Union then rallied to win 14-13 Saturday's rubber game of the series. Union improved to 15-21 on the season and 7-17 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH dropped to 14-20 overall and 10-14 in league play.
Union needed this series, trying to keep its postseason hopes alive. Union is currently 10th, looking to get into the top eight to make the GSC Tournament. Union now hold the tie breaker over No. 8 UAH and No. 9 Valdosta State. Union has three GSC weekends remaining, at AUM, home versus No. 7 Montevallo, and at Christian Brothers.
Saturday's game three was a back-and-forth game a little bit of everything. The two teams combined for 27 runs, 29 hits, and 10 errors. Union led 5-0 after five runs in the second. UAH rallied back to lead 13-6 after the fifth inning. Union began to chip away with eight unanswered runs, a run in the six, four in the seventh, two in the eighth, and the inning run in the ninth. Several key hits during the comeback included an RBI double from
Eli Gipson, a double by 3-RBI double from
Grant Ross, and a 2-run home run from
Canyon Pace in the eight inning to tie the game. Union scored in the ninth when
Elijah Ramsey scored on a ground ball RBI from
Caleb Davis. Ross, Gipson, and Pace led with three hits each. Gipson and Ross led with three RBI.
In Saturday's game, Union used five pitchers.
Cody Tjomsland (1-0) got the win in relief, tossing one-third of an inning in the eighth, keeping the score tied with no runs, no hits, and a walk. Lannom (4) earned the save, tossing an inning with no runs or hits, with a strikeout and two walks.
Friday's first game produced 31 runs and 36 hits between the two teams with Union winning 16-15. Union scored in six of the nine innings, including six in the seventh and one in the eighth to gain the lead. UAH also scored in six of the nine innings, including two in the fifth, five in the sixth, one in the seventh, and three in the eighth. However, Union was able to hang on as neither team scored in the ninth. Gipson and Allen both hit home runs in the game as a part of Union 17 hits. Gipson led with four hits, while Ross and
Ethan Quinn added three hits each. Quinn and Allen led with three RBI each. Five pitchers used by Union with
Chris Troyer (3-2) getting the win in relief, tossing 2.2 innings with four runs, four hits, four strikeouts, and three walks. Lannon followed Troyer with a perfect ninth inning, three-up-three-down with three strikeouts.
In Friday's second game, Union led 4-1 after scoring four runs in the third. That was it for the Bulldogs as UAH scored three in the fourth to tie the game, one in the fifth and then blew the game open with 10 in the sixth. Ross homered for Union and had three of the team's four RBI. Ross along with
Kylon Joyner and Ramsey led with two hits each. Union again, as in game one and game three, used five pitcher.
Takuma Sato (0-5) took the loss in relief.
Cole Lannom started and went three innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits with two strikeouts and three walks.
Union is on the road all next week with a non-conference game at Harding April 7 at 5 p.m. and then a GSC weekend series at AUM Friday and Saturday.
