JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University baseball team lost twice Saturday to No. 8 University of West Alabama to drop the weekend series. Union lost 6-5 in game one, followed by a 4-1 defeat in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader. Union dropped to 13-20 on the season and 5-16 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 25-7 overall and 16-5 in league play.
Union won Friday's series opener 8-3.
In game one, West Alabama scored a run in the first, two in the the second and three in the third innings for all of its scoring. Union got two runs in the second on a 2-RBI double from
Joseph Hufstedler. Union added a run in the fifth when Kylon Jorner drove in
Matthew Autry with a single to get Union to within three runs at 6-3. Union left the bases loaded in the sixth, two in scoring position in the seventh, and one in the eight inning without scoring. However, in the ninth, Union mounted a rally, scoring two runs on a double from
Jordan Allen with the bases loaded. However, the Bulldogs left two more runners on base, 11 total in the game, and fell 6-5.
Grant Ross and Hufstedler led with two hits each.
Carter Daniel (1-5) took the loss for Union in the start, going six innings with six runs, five earned, on nine hits with eight strikeouts and just three walks.
Alex Johnson did a nice job in relief, going three innings with no runs, two hits allowed and one strikeout to keep you in the game.
The second game again had the UWA Tigers scoring first with two runs in the second and two in the fifth for their run output. Union managed its lone run in the fifth on a pinch hit single from Joyner to drive in
Caden Walker, unearned. Seven Union players managed one hit each in the game.
Nathan Myers (3-3) took the loss in the start, allowing four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings of work with two strikeouts and a walk.
Chris Troyer tossed 2.2 solid innings of relief, allowing no run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Union midweek game next week versus UT Martin has been canceled. The Bulldogs will be back in action next weekend with a GSC road series at UAH.
