Strong second half lifts Union women over AUM

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 84-66 win at Auburn University Montgomery Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 16-7 overall and 11-4 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM dropped to 3-21 on the season and 3-14 in league play. 

Union currently sits in second place in the league standings, three games behind the leader UAH, and two games clear of third-place Lee and Trevecca. 

The two teams played a close first quarter with AUM holding three separate one-point leads. However, it was Union up by one, 23-22, at quarter's end. 

Union opened the second quarter with a 12-2 run to push its lead to 35-24. AUM kept the deficit between 7-11 points for most of the rest of the quarter. Then AUM closed out the quarter with a 10-2 run to cut the Union lead to just 43-40 going into the lockerroom. 

The Lady Bulldogs pushed the lead back to double figures again in the third quarter, leading by as many as 12 points, 56-44, with 2:50 left. Union held a 60-50 lead going into the final quarter. 

The fourth quarter was Union's best, outscoring AUM 24-16 and taking the 84-66 final. That 18-point lead at the end of the game was Union's largest of the night. 

Union was led by Olivia Lee with 19 points. Courtney Zensen added 17 points with five 3-pointers, while Abigail Bryan scored 15 points. The Lady Bulldogs shot 44 percent from the field, 30 percent (12-40) from long range, and made two of their three free throws. 

AUM was led by Flatguard with 21 points, Brown with 16, and Gray with 11. The Warhawks shot 46 percent from the field, 47 percent (7-15) from 3-point range, and 88 percent (15-17) from the foul line. 

Up next for Union will be the home makeup game with Delta State University that was postponed due to the winter storm. The women's game will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, February 10 at the Fred.
