Second half lead slips away in Union women's loss to Delta State

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team lost 80-77 to Delta State University Tuesday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 16-8 on the season and 11-5 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State improved to 13-9 overall and 11-6 in league play.

This game was the make-up game from January 24 that was postponed due to the winter storm that hit North Mississippi and West Tennessee. The game also gave Delta State the sweep of the regular season series with Union, winning back in December in Cleveland, 67-62.

The Lady Statesmen opened the game up with a 7-0 run. Union rallied back to lead 14-12, and the race was on. Union held a 19-16 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was back-and-forth with four ties and eight lead changes. Union clung to a one-point lead, 39-38, going into the locker room.

Union seemed to be taking control in the third quarter. The Lady Bulldogs pushed out to their largest lead of the night at 16 points, 59-43, on a 3-pointer from Katie Yoder with 4:10 left in the quarter. Delta State slowed the Union run and clipped their deficit down to 10 points, 67-57, going into the fourth.

In the fourth, Delta State outscored Union 16-4 over the first six and a half minutes to take a 73-71 lead. Union managed to tie the game at 73-73 and 75-75, but could not get the lead. Union was 2-for-4 from the free-throw line in the final minute, including a shot to take the lead.

Union was led by Olivia Lee with 24 points and seven rebounds. Abigail Bryan and Aubrey Sorrells added 15 points each, while Courtney Zensen scored 11. The Lady Bulldogs shot 46 percent from the field, 42 percent (11-26) from long range, and 74 percent (14-19) from the free throw line.

Delta State was led by Kennedee Shelton with 18 points. Madi Kate Vuncannon added 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting from 3-point range. Anna Cera scored 11 points, and Jariyah Williamson added a game-high 11 rebounds. The Lady Statesmen shot 44 percent from the field, 45 percent (9-20) from beyond the arc, and 91 percent (19-21) from the free throw line.

Union will continue its home stand with two more games this weekend. First up is West Alabama Thursday at 5:30 p.m., followed by UAH Saturday at 2 p.m.
