MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted an 83-60 win at the University of Montevallo Thursday night. Union improved to 15-7 overall and 10-4 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo dropped to 3-18 on the season and 2-14 in league play.
The win for Union was not only the 10th GSC win of the season, but also the 790th career win for head coach Mark Campbell. Union moved into sole possession of second place in the GSC, three games behind leader UAH, with eight regular-season games remaining.
Union's Courtney Zensen opened the game with a 3-pointer. Montevallo responded and took a 6-5 lead, then led again at 9-7. Union responded with a 10-2 run to lead 17-11 before taking a 17-15 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Montevallo stayed close and led one final time, 24-22, with 5:22 left in the half. Union then took over, outscoring the Falcons 19-0 over the final five-plus minutes to close out the half. Union hit five straight 3-pointers in that stretch, four of those from Zensen. The Lady Bulldogs led 41-24 at the half.
Zensen finished with 21 first-half points to lead all scorers.
In the second half, Montevallo scored the first four points of the third quarter, but Union answered with an Olivia Lee three-pointer, the ninth of the night for Union. Aubrey Sorrells scored back-to-back baskets for Union to put the lead at 50-33. Union then went on a scoring drought that lasted almost three minutes, while Montevallo cut its deficit to 12 points. Union closed out the half with an 8-2 run, pushing the lead back to 18 points, 60-42, going into the fourth.
Union opened the fourth with Lee's 16th point of the night, extending Union's lead to 20 points for the first time in the game. Union took its largest lead of the night, 83-64, before taking the 83-60 road win.
Union was led by Zensen with a career-high 21 points and seven 3-pointers. Lee added 18 points and eight rebounds. Sorrells scored 15 points, while Nora Saffell matched her career-high of 14 points for the third time this season. Union shot 38 percent from the field, 27 percent (12-46) from long range, and made all five free throws on the night.
Montevallo was led by Mouser with 15 points and Richardson with 10. The Falcons shot 51 percent from the field, 39 percent (7=18) from 3-point range, and 73 percent (11-15) from the foul line.
