JACKSON, Tenn.- Union fought until the final outs all weekend, but Delta State claimed all three games of the series at Fesmire Field, winning 9-2, 3-2 (13 inn.), and 12-4.
In Friday's opener, the Bulldogs were undone by a seven-run third inning from Delta State, ultimately falling 9-2. Despite being limited to three hits through eight innings, Union continued to compete and showed life in the ninth. Caleb Davis singled to spark the rally, and the Bulldogs loaded the bases before Eli Gipson drew an RBI walk and Kylon Joyner delivered an RBI single to center to plate two runs.
Saturday's first game was a pitcher's duel that turned into a marathon. Union struck first in the opening frame when Grant Ross delivered an RBI single to score Gipson. The Bulldogs added another run in the sixth, capitalizing on pressure on the basepaths to even the game at 2-2. From there, Union's pitching staff kept Delta State off the board into the 13th inning. After the Statesmen pushed across a run in the top half, Union put the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning but could not complete the comeback in a 3-2 loss.
In the series finale, Union faced an early deficit but responded with power at the plate. Jake Keyl launched a solo home run in the third, and the Bulldogs continued to chip away as Ross lifted a sacrifice fly in the fifth. In the sixth, Matthew Autry added a solo homer to right field to highlight Union's offensive effort.
The Bulldogs now look to regroup and build on the competitive moments from the series as they move forward to player Mississippi College on the road.
