Bulldogs Rally with Five-Run Fourth, Power Past Lane 12-8

JACKSON, Tenn.- Union used a pair of big innings and timely power at the plate to secure a 12-8 win over Lane on Tuesday afternoon at Fesmire Field.

The Bulldogs improved to 7-4 on the season, overcoming an early four-run deficit with a dominant middle stretch that flipped the momentum for good.

Union struck first in the opening inning when Eli Gipson scored on a wild pitch to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. After Lane answered with a solo home run in the second and erupted for five runs in the third, Union trailed 6-2.

The response was immediate.

In the bottom of the fourth, Union exploded for five runs to reclaim the lead. Nick Stamper and Ethan Quinn opened the frame with singles before Caden Walker delivered the biggest swing of the day — a towering grand slam to left field that tied the game at 6-6. Later in the inning, Gipson reached and came around to score on a Lane error, pushing Union ahead 7-6.

Union continued to apply pressure in the fifth when Gipson drove in Caden Walker with an RBI single, extending the lead to 8-6.

The Bulldogs added insurance in the sixth on a solo home run from Grant Ross to make it 9-7, his first of the afternoon. Then in the seventh, Union put the game out of reach. After Quinn singled and stole second, the Bulldogs loaded the bases. Kylon Joyner delivered in a big way, ripping a double to left that cleared the bases and stretched the advantage to 12-7.

Walker finished with a game-high four RBIs on his grand slam, while Joyner drove in three runs in the seventh. Ross added two hits and a home run, and Quinn scored twice while swiping a bag to spark the offense. Despite collecting nine hits, Union capitalized on 10 walks and Lane's three errors to generate 12 runs.

On the mound, Alex Johnson earned the win in relief, tossing two scoreless innings and allowing just one hit with two strikeouts. The Union bullpen combined for 13 strikeouts on the day, limiting Lane to three earned runs despite the eight runs scored.

Union will look to carry the momentum into this weekend as they host their first home series against Delta State.
