JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's basketball team lost 89-83 to The University of Alabama in Huntsville Saturday afternoon at Fred DeLay Gymnasium, David Blackstock Court. Union dropped to 9-15 overall and 5-13 in the Gulf South Conference. UAH improved to 18-7 on the season and 13-6 in the GSC.
Union jumped out to the early 21-7 lead, including a 12-0 stretch, hitting four straight 3-pointers. Devaki Garr hit three, and Sam Youngblood hit the other one. Union maintained the lead in the first half, except for one possession, when UAH took a brief 5-4 lead. After a fourth first-half 3-pointer from Garr, Union led by 11, 43-32, with 1:30 left in the half. UAH outscored Union 5-0 in the final 1:30, including a 3-pointer in the final seconds to cut the Union lead down to 43-37 at the half.
Youngblood led all scorers with 15 first-half points, including 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point range. Garr added four 3-pointers for 12 points in the opening half. UAH's Toles led the Chargers with 13 points in the half.
UAH continued the momentum started late in the first half. Union got the first basket, but UAH hit three straight 3-pointers to take the lead, 46-45, its first advantage since it was 5-4 early. Union kept it close, getting to within two points a few times down the stretch, but could not regain the lead. UAH's largest lead of the night was nine points, 88-79, before settling for the 89-83 final. UAH outscored Union 52-40 in the second half.
Union was led by Garr with 17 points. Ringo posted 16 points and 10 boards for his 14th double-double of the season and 10th in the past 11 games. Youngblood finished with his 15 first-half points, while Jamiir Allen added 12. Union shot 48 percent from the field, 52 percent (13-25) from long range, and made all eight free throws.
UAH was led by Toles with 27 points and Mabe with 22. The Chargers shot 44 percent from the field, 30 percent (7-23) from 3-point range, and 91 percent (20-22) from the foul line.
