VALDOSTA, Ga. - The Union University baseball team swept the double-header Saturday at Valdosta State University, winning game one 10-4 in 10 innings, then rallying to take game two, 15-9. Union improved to 6-4 overall and 2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 3-7 on the year and 1-2 in league play.
Union dropped game one of the series Friday, 9-8 in 10 innings.
The first game of the day ended in the second extra inning game of the series. Union scored first with a run in the third. After VSU tied the game in the fourth, Union regained the lead with a run in the six, then added to it with two in the seventh to lead 4-1. VSU scored a run in the seventh, one in the eighth, and a lead off homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game. In the 10th, Union scored two runs on an RBI single from Dylon Barrett and a sacrifice fly from
Cody Tjomsland. Then, Union scored four more times, all coming on bases loaded walks. Union's
Cole Lannom (2-1) closed out the bottom of the 10th for his second win of the season. Lannom tossed two innings, allowing no runs on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks. Takuma Soto tossed 6.1 innings in the start.
Lane Evans tossed 1.2 innings in middle relief. Union recorded 11 hits with
Canyon Pace leading the Bulldogs with three hits.
Elijah Ramsey led with two RBI, while Pac,
Eli Gipson, and
Caleb Davis all scored twice.
In game two Saturday, Union took the lead early with two runs in the first. VSU responded with four in the first and three in the second. Union battled back with two in the third on a 2-run homer from
Grant Ross. The Bulldogs added one in the fourth, and one in the fifth to cut the deficit to 7-6. Then, Union exploded for nine runs in the sixth inning to lead 15-7. Ramsey's 2-RBI single and a Davis RBI double were the big blows in that 9-run outburst. VSU added a few runs late to set the final at 15-9. Union pounded out 14 hits led by Ramsey with three. Ross led with three RBI, while Davis and Rasmey led with three runs scored each. Union used five pitchers in the win, with
Nathan Myers (3-0) getting the win in relief. He was the second pitcher in the game for Union, going 3.1 innings with no run, two hits, no walks, and one strikeout.
Chris Troyer got the start, lasting 1.2 innings with seven runs allowed.
Garrett Telaga, Ross, and Tjomsland combined to pitch the final two innings.
Up next for Union will be a home non-conference game versus Lane College, February 18 at 3 p.m. at Fesmire Field.
