VALDOSTA, Ga.- Union opened Gulf South Conference play Friday evening in a back-and-forth battle at Valdosta State, ultimately falling 9-8 in 10 innings despite an explosive offensive performance.
The Bulldogs struck first in the bottom of the opening frame, but Union answered immediately. In the second inning, Canyon Pace delivered an RBI single to plate the first run of GSC play for the Bulldogs, and a sacrifice fly from Jake Keyl gave Union a 2-1 advantage.
After Valdosta State surged ahead in the second, Union responded with a five-run stretch across the third and fourth innings to seize control. Pace came through again with a two-RBI single in the third, while Matthew Autry added an RBI knock to even the score at 4-4 before pushing Union in front. In the fourth, Grant Ross continued his big night with an RBI double, and Dyllon Barrett added a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 7-4.
Ross powered the offense all evening, finishing 3-for-4 with two doubles, a home run, and two RBI. His solo shot in the sixth inning pushed Union's advantage to 8-5 and marked his first home run of conference play. Pace also had a standout performance, driving in three runs as part of an 8-hit effort from the Bulldogs.
On the mound, Eli Jackson provided stability in relief, tossing 3.2 innings while striking out five and allowing just one run to keep Union in front during the middle innings. Lane Evans followed with 2.1 strong innings and six strikeouts, helping carry the game into the late frames.
Valdosta State chipped away late, tying the game in the eighth and forcing extra innings. Union had opportunities down the stretch but could not push across the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the 10th, the Blazers capitalized on a wild pitch to walk it off.
Union finished with eight runs on eight hits and committed no errors in the GSC opener. The Bulldogs will look to bounce back tomorrow with a double header at Valdosta. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
