No. 18 West Alabama holds off Union men, 73-62

LIVINGSTON, Ala. - The Union University men's basketball team lost 73-62 at the University of West Alabama. Union dropped to 7-6 overall and 3-4 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama improved to 13-1 on the season and a perfect 8-0 in league play. 

After trailing by as many as 14 points in the first half, Union clipped the deficit down to nine points at the half, 41-32. 

Union continued to chip away and pushed the ranked home Tigers with a 12-4 run to open the half. At the 15:57 mark of the second half, Union had cut the West Alabama lead to just one point, 45-44. 

West Alabama held off each Union run and never gave up the lead in the second half. Union kept the UWA lead to between four and eight points for the majority of the second half. With 3:02 left to play, Union had pulled to within five points, 65-60. The Tigers responded one last time. An 8-2 run over the final three minutes by West Alabama put the game away late.  

Union was led by Will Lovings-Watts with a game-high 24 points. Terrence Ringo, Jr. added 12 points. Jack Shackelford led with seven rebounds and added five points. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 25 percent (6-24) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (6-8) from the foul line. 

West Alabama put four players in double figures. Thompson and Frederick scored 14 points each, while Brown and Parr added 13 points apiece. The Tigers shot 41 percent from the field, 11 percent (2-19) from long range, and 79 percent (15-19) from the free throw line. 

Union returns home for a pair of GSC games, the first being Thursday, January 8, at 7:30 p.m. versus Valdosta State.
