JACKSON, Tenn. - On Tuesday afternoon, the Union University softball team split their midweek doubleheader with Ouachita Baptist University. The Tigers won game one 3-1 in nine innings, and the Lady Bulldogs took game two 2-0. After the day, Union's overall record stands at 8-29, while Ouachita Baptist's moves to 13-25.
Game one saw Union score their lone run in the bottom of the first courtesy of a
Rylee Moore RBI groundout. The Tigers then added a run of their own in the fourth. From there, the game remained tied until Emily Reed hit a two-run blast to left center to put Ouachita Baptist up 3-1 in the ninth with that score being the final.
Morgan Jennings led the Lady Bulldogs, going 3-4 in the contest and scoring the only run. Moore got the start in the circle, pitching four innings and striking out five Tigers, while allowing one unearned run on one hit and one walk.
Emily Claire Felder threw the final five innings in relief and struck out five batters. She took the loss after giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits.
Game two was all Union as
Kira Finkley and
Riley Vaughn combined to no-hit Ouachita Baptist. Finkley got the win, tossing four innings and striking out seven. Vaughn came in for relief in the fifth and pitched the last three innings, earning her first save of the season as she struck out three Tigers.
The Union offense recorded seven hits in the game with two each coming from
Sarah Kate Thompson and Jennings. Union's two runs came in the second inning after back-to-back singles from Jennings and Thompson with Jennings' being a bunt single.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Huntsville, Ala., to face the University of Alabama in Huntsville in a three-game series on Apr. 4-5. The series was originally supposed to be in Jackson, Tenn., but is being moved due to weather. Union will still be the home team.Â
