NASHVILLE, Tenn. - On Mar. 14 and 16, the Union University softball team won their series with No. 13 Trevecca Nazarene University. Both games of the doubleheader on Mar. 14 ended in victories for the Lady Bulldogs with scores of 2-0 and 8-2, respectively, while the Trojans took a 1-0 walk off win in game three on Mar. 16. After the series, Union improves to 7-20 overall (5-9 GSC), and Trevecca drops to 16-8 overall (7-8 GSC).
Game one was a pitcher's duel between
Riley Vaughn and Ashlan Sensing. Vaughn was spectacular, throwing all seven innings and striking out seven Trojans while allowing no runs and only three hits and two walks. The Lady Bulldogs had five hits off Sensing, finally breaking through with two unearned runs in the sixth inning after
Sarah Kate Thompson singled and she and
Morgan Jennings scored on an error. Thompson led the team with a 2-3 game, and Vaughn got the win, her second of the season.
Game two saw the Lady Bulldogs explode for eight runs on 13 hits with four coming in the third inning, two in the fourth, and two in the fifth. Trevecca added one run in their half of the third and another in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to overtake Union.
Four Lady Bulldogs had multiple hits in the game.
Rylee Moore and Jennings each went 3-4 with one of Jennings' hits being a double to drive in a run. Moore also had two RBIs of her own.
Camryn Langley was 2-3 with two RBIs, and
Hailey Sipes went 2-4 with two runs scored.
Moore got the start and the win in game two, pitching six innings and striking out five Trojans.
Emily Claire Felder threw the final inning in relief with two of the three outs she recorded being strikeouts.
Game three was a nailbiter as Union had only two hits and Trevecca recorded just three, one of which was a walk off single in the bottom of the seventh.
Mallory Hildebrand and Thompson had one hit apiece.
Felder pitched all of game three, going 6.2 innings and allowing only one run on three hits and two walks while striking out four.
Up next, the Lady Bulldogs will travel to Searcy, Ark., to face No. 15 Harding University in a midweek doubleheader. First pitch of game one is scheduled for Mar. 18 at 2:00 p.m. with game two to follow.
