HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The Union University men's basketball team suffered an 88-70 loss on Saturday night at the hands of the #4 UAH Chargers, who remained unbeaten in conference play (19-0), improved to 24-1 overall and claimed a share of the GSC regular season title.
Union (12-12, 8-10) falls to seventh in the conference–two games better than Lee and AUM–and will look to clinch one of the four unclaimed conference tournament berths with four games remaining.
Early in the second half, UAH began a 19-0 run, during which the Chargers prevented a Union score for nearly six minutes and ballooned a four-point deficit into a 15-point lead. The Chargers led by as many as 22 for the remainder of the game.
Tommy Murr led the potent UAH offense with 29 points, while Blake Campbell (16), Luke Burnett (12), Matthew Thurman (12) and Daniel Saylor (11) also finished in double-figures for the Chargers, who led 44-41 at halftime before holding the Bulldogs to 29 points in the second session.
Jeremiah Littlepage and
Devaki Garr led Union with 16 points apiece;
CJ Jackson and
Judson Bjornstad had 13 and 10.
Parker Applegate led all rebounders with 10 and had seven points.
The Bulldogs shot 13-35 (.371) from beyond the arc, their second-most made three-point shots of the season behind the 16 they scored against AUM on February 8.
Union is now 0-8 when scoring 70 points or fewer and 4-8 when allowing 74 points or more.
Since joining the GSC in 2012, Union is 5-23 against the Chargers and has lost six of the last seven meetings.
Union will host its final home weekend of the season when the Bulldogs play West Florida on Thursday and Valdosta State on Saturday in the Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
