Union women’s basketball tops AUM in conference action

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 109-50 win over Auburn University at Montgomery. Union, receiving votes in the latest WBCA national rankings, improved to 8-4 overall and 3-1 in the Gulf South Conference. AUM dropped to 0-11 on the season and 0-5 in league play.

It was the third time in four games for Union to eclipse the 100-point mark. The one game they did not reach 100 was a 98-point outing this past Monday in a win over Drury.

Neither team scored until AUM hit a jumper over two minutes into play. Union did not take its first lead until 6-4 with 5:40 left to play on a jumper from La'Sonja Hill. That sparked the Union offense, and over the final 5:40 in the first quarter, Union outscored AUM 19-4 to lead 23-8. In the second quarter extended its lead to as many as 22 points, 44-22, before settling for the 48-28 halftime lead.

Hill for Union and Brown for AUM led with 10 points each in the first half. All 10 players who played in the first half for Union scored. Union's largest lead was the 59-point final score.

Union tied the school record with 44 forced turnovers in the game. Union scored 50 points off those turnovers, which was the fourth most in school history.

Union continued to cruise in the second half, scoring 28 points in the third and 33 more in the fourth. Union was 7-of-10 from 3-point range in the final 10 minutes.

Five players reached double figures for Union, while all 12 players who played scored. Courtney Zenson led with 15 points, while Hill and Maddie Gray scored 14 each. Kaitlyn Yoder finished with 12, and Abigail Bryan with 11. Union shot 50 percent from the field, 41 percent (14-34) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (9-12) from the free throw line.

AUM was led by Tamora Brown with 12 points. AUM shot 40 percent from the field, 22 percent (2-9) form long range, and 67 percent (12-18) from the free throw line.

Up next for Union will be the final game before Christmas, a home game Saturday, December 20 at 2 p.m. versus the University of Montevallo.
