Late surge lifts Maryville over Union men's basketball, 78-71

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The Union University men's basketball team lost on the road Monday night at Maryville University, 78-71. Union dropped to 2-2 on the season, while Maryville improved to 1-4 overall. 

Union led 67-58 with 6:24 left following a 3-pointer from Will Lovings-Watts. Lovings-Watts finished with a game-high 30 points. 

Maryville, however, outscored Union 20-4 6:08 of play, including a 12-0 run to take a 70-67 lead with 2:57 left. Union got a basket from Mason McBride and a pair of free throws from Lovings-Watts, but never led again. 

Union's 9-point lead late in the second half was its largest lead, while Maryville's 7-point final score margin was its largest lead of the night. 

In a back-and-forth first half, Union held a couple of 7-point leads before Maryville clung to a 40-39 lead at the half. The game featured 10 ties and 12 lead changes. 

Union newcomer Lovings-Watts hit the 30-point mark for the second time this season in just four games (31 points vs. Rollins). He was 17--20 from the free throw line himself. McBride added 11 points, while JaDyn Lee scored 10 points. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 36 percent (8-22) from long range, and 77 percent (23-30) from the foul line. 

Maryville's Lincoln Palbicki led his squad with a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds. Maryville shot 48 percent from the field, 36 percent (9-25) from 3-point range, and 64 percent (7-11) from the free throw line.
