JACKSON, Tenn. - On Saturday afternoon, the No. 13/RV Union University women's basketball team earned their eighth straight victory as they won 104-69 against the University of West Alabama. The Lady Bulldogs continue to lead the conference as the only team still undefeated in league play. Their overall record sits at 12-2 (7-0 GSC), while the Tigers drop to 1-11 overall (1-7 GSC).
Emily Jones was a key contributor in the contest, scoring 32 points, a personal career high and the most for any Union player in a game this season. She shot an impressive 76.9 percent (10-13) from the field, 50 percent (3-6) from three-point range, and 90 percent (9-10) from the foul line and also led Union in rebounds and steals with eight each. Her eight steals and nine free throw makes were the most for any Lady Bulldog in a single game in those respective categories so far this season. Eight steals is also a career high for Jones.
Union had a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter and allowed West Alabama to score 23 points to their own 25 to go into halftime ahead 45-31. However, the Lady Bulldogs were not satisfied, almost doubling their first half total by scoring 39 points in the third quarter alone on their way to a 35-point victory. This was the third time in history the program has tallied that many points in a single quarter. The record is 40 points in a single quarter, which Union has done twice this season.Â
Four other Lady Bulldogs joined Jones in double-digits, including
Olivia Lee and
Macey Lee with 12 points apiece,
Jeremia Montgomery with 11, and
Bethany Dillard with 10.
Jazalyn Anousinh,
Shylee Morrison, and Dillard each handed out three assists in the game with the number being a season high for Dillard.
Nora Saffell grabbed two steals, a career high for the freshman.
Macey Lee put up two blocks, leading the team and tying her career high. As a team, Union shot 46.2 percent (36-78) from the field, 25.7 percent (9-35) from beyond the arc, and 82.1 percent (23-38) from the free throw line.
Kendall Lacoste led the Tigers with 24 points, accounting for over 30 percent of their scoring. West Alabama shot 40.6 percent (26-64) from the field, 36.8 percent (7-19) from three-point range, and 71.4 percent (10-14) from the foul line.
Up next, Union will take a road trip to Valdosta, Ga., where they will face Valdosta State University on Jan. 9 at 5:00 p.m. central standard time.
