Bulldogs secure key series win over No. 25 West Florida

JACKSON, Tenn. - On Apr. 6, the Union University baseball team played games two and three of their series with No. 25 the University of West Florida and were able to secure the series win. Union lost game two 23-0 in seven innings but won game three after scoring five runs in the seventh with the final being 5-4. The Bulldogs are now 14-20 overall (8-13 GSC), and the Argos are 23-14 overall (14-7 GSC).

In game three, Union starter Sam Poindexter threw 4.2 innings, allowing four runs, seven hits, and five walks while striking out three. The Bulldogs were down 4-0, going into the last inning. Colby Davis drove in the first run for Union after Caden Cutrell was hit by a pitch and Elijah Ramsey doubled to left center. Ryan Aljancic followed Davis with a single through the left side to score Ramsey. Then Eli Snelson reached on an error, allowing Davis to score and bringing the Bulldogs to within one run. One batter later Carson Chavies reached on a fielder's choice, and Matthew Autry, who pinch ran for Aljancic, scored, tying the game 4-4. With the bases loaded, Mitch Sisk struck out swinging but was able to reach, and Snelson scored as Union took the lead 5-4. Jamal Allen, who relieved Poindexter with two outs in the fifth, shut the door on the Argos, collecting the win and allowing only one hit and striking out one.

In game two, the Bulldogs got only four hits as they were run ruled by West Florida in seven innings. Will Allen Smith, Grant Ross, Chavies, and Sisk had one hit apiece. Noah Toney got the start and took the loss, while Chase Spears, Cole Smith, Scotty Wyatt, Alex Johnson, Jack Rasmussen, and Cody Tjomsland each threw in relief.

Up next, the Bulldogs travel to Clinton, Miss., for a midweek matchup with Mississippi College on Apr. 9. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
