Before Union
Toney transfers to Union following one season of baseball at Wallace State Community College in Hanceville, Ala. As a freshman, he accumulated a 3.90 ERA on the mound as a starter, reliever, and closer. At the plate, he hit .303 for the Lions. He led his team to a conference championship and a No. 23 rankings in D1 JUCO baseball. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa. Toney prepped at Florence High School, where he played two years of basketball and four years each of football and baseball. During this time, Toney was recognized with several athletic honors, including All-Area and All-State in baseball, and team captain in football and baseball. He was also once named Player of the Week in football. Toney was named Offensive MVP and Pitcher of the Year in high school. He helped lead his baseball team to the area championship as a junior.

Off the field, Toney was named to the honor roll and National Honors Society, while graduating with honors and athletic distinctions. He was named to the Dean's List at Wallace State both semesters. He was also selected to the Homecoming Court.
