Union women fall in NCAA Region Semifinals to Eckerd, 64-57

TAMPA, Fla. - The Union University women's basketball lost 64-57 in the second round of the 2023 NCAA D2 Women's Basketball National Championships regional round to Eckerd College. Union, the 3-seed in the region, ended its season at 28-4. Eckerd, seeded second, improved to 26-5.
Union struggled in the game from the field, ever able to get anything going offensively. Union held three 1-point leads throughout and then with just over seven minutes left, led 45-43, its largest lead of the night. Union's Shanique Lucas got an offensive rebound and put pack to put Union up by four. However, a foul was called against Union on the rebound, canceling the basket. Eckerd then hit back-to-back 3-pointers to take 4-point lead.
Union rallied one last time to tie the game at 51-51 but could not get the defensive stop needed down the stretch.
Eckerd led by as many as eight points in the first quarter. Union trailed by two at the end of the first quarter, one at halftime, and one point at the end of the third quarter. Eckerd outscored Union 21-15 in the fourth to take the win.
Union shot just 33 percent from the field, 16 percent (4-25) from long range, and 79 percent (15-19) from the free throw line.
Union was led by Shanique Lucas with 19 points. Naomi Van Nes posted career highs of 14 points and 10 rebounds.
Eckerd was led by Hannah Wentworth with 23 points, Lauryn Vierira with 20 points, and Sofia Persson with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Tritons shot 40 percent from the field, 29 percent (8-28) from 3-point range, and 78 percent (14-18) from the free throw line.
