JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University softball team took two games from the University of West Florida in the first day of the series. Union won the first game 3-2 in nine innings and the second 5-3. Union improved to 9-7 overall on the season and 4-1 in the Gulf South Conference. West Florida moved to 6-6 overall and 0-2 in the GSC.
In the first game,
Fallon Groves led the team going 3-for-4 with one home run and one RBI.
Mackenzi David also had a multi-hit performance going 2-for-3 with a walk. Freshman
Riley Vaughn (4-2) got the start in the circle earning her fourth win of the season. She threw nine innings, giving up only two earned runs on four hits and striking out five.
The game was scoreless through six innings. West Florida scored two in the top of the seventh to take the lead. Grove led off the bottom of the seventh with a home run. Then
Allie Whitfield doubled off the left center field wall to tie the game. Her shot was just a few feet from leaving the yard and becoming a 3-run walk-off home run. Instead, in the bottom of the ninth,
Morgan Jennings got the walk-off single, a hit into left field, scoring David from second.
In the second game, both
Macey Neal and
Grace White led the team Neal going 2-for-4, and White going 2-for-3.
Hailey Sipes led the team in RBI after hitting a three-run home run in the fifth.
Kira Finkley (2-3) picked up her second win of the season throwing seven innings giving up three runs on eight hits earning 10 strikeouts.
Union trailed 2-0 for the second time today, but rallied again. Union's Neal scored on a wild pitch in the third and then Sipes hit a 3-run homer in the fifth to put Union up 5-2.
Up next for Union is the last game of the series against West Florida. This game is set to take place Sunday, Feb 26 at 1:00 p.m. at USJ's field.
