ROME, Ga. - The Union University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep at Shorter University to open up Gulf South Conference play. Union won the first game 10-1 and the second game 11-1, both in five innings. Union improved to 7-6 overall and 2-0 in the GSC. Shorter dropped to 3-8 on the season and 0-2 in league play.Â
The win for Union moved the winning streak to seven games. It also marked six straight games for Union to scored at least 10 runs.Â
Union scored the game's first 10 runs, while Shorter added their single tally in the fourth. Mackenzie David got things started with an RBI double in the second. She also capped off Union's scoring with a 3-run home run in the top of the fourth. Union also got doubles from
Courtney Marler and
Brooke Puckett. All nine offensive starters in the game recorded at least one hit for Union.
Bryleigh Carneal,
Macey Neal, David, and Puckett each had two hits. David led with four RBI.
Riley Vaughn (4-2) tossed a complete game one-hitter, allowing one run with eight strikeouts.Â
The second game was much like the first. Union scored the first 11 runs of the game with Shorter getting one run in the fifth. Union scored in all five innings. David again got things started with a 2-RBI double in the first.
Fallon Groves hit a solo home run in the second for Union. The Lady Bulldogs recorded eight extra base hits in the game including two doubles from
Idalia Alarcon, two from David, one double from
Macey Neal, one double from
Grace White, a triple form M. Neal and the Groves homer. Alarcon,
Kira Finkley, M. Neal, and David all recorded two hits. David again led with four RBI, while M. Neal had three.
Emily Claire Felder (3-1) went the distance, allowing a run on four hits with non strikeouts and four walks.Â
The two teams will close out the series in Sunday's game three.Â
