JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep over Ouachita Baptist University Wednesday at the University School of Jackson softball field. Union rallied to win the first game 18-15 and then took game two 10-7. Union improved to 5-6 on the season, while Ouachita Baptist dropped to 4-5.Â
This sweep pushed Union's winning streak to five games. Union also set a record with six home runs in a game, breaking the old mark of four homers hit in a game in 2006.Â
Game one started rough for Union, falling behind 13-1 through the first two and a half innings. OBU scored six in the first, three in the second, and four in the third. Union tallied a run in the bottom of the second on an
Idalia Alarcon home run. However, Union stormed back with 11 runs in the bottom of the third and six more in the fifth to rally for the win. Union outhit OBU 14-12 in the game. Seven Union players got at least one hit with four players posting multi-hit games.
Macey Neal led the way with a 4-for-5 game with four RBI, three runs, a double, and a home run.
Bryleigh Carneal was 3-for-5, while
Fallon Groves and
Brooke Puckett were both 2-for-4.
Grace White and Puckett matched Neal's four RBI to lead the team. Union hit six home runs in the game, led by Puckett with two, while
Macey Neal, Alarcon, White, and Groves each hit one. Puckett joined
Macey Neal as players this season that have tied the school record for homers in a game with two.
Emily Claire Felder (1-1) earned the win in relief, tossing 6.2 innings with nine hits, and nine runs, four earned with a strikeout.
Riley Vaughn started and lasted one-third of an inning.Â
Game two was not as high-scoring at the opener but still produced a few fireworks. OBU scored in the first but Union answered with four in the bottom of the first. The big blow was a 2-run homer from
Courtney Marler. After the Tigers regained the lead with four in the third and one in the fifth, Union was back down again, 6-4. However, another 4-spot for Union in the fifth put the Lady Bulldogs up for good. Union got two more in the six for insurance. Union outhit OBU 13-11 in the game with eight Union players getting at least one hit. Marler was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored.
Macey Neal was 3-for-3 with three runs. Alarcon was 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run, while
Grace White had two RBI with a hit. Marley had the team's only two extra-base hits with one homer and one double.
Kira Finkley (1-2) went the distance, surviving the ups and downs of the game, including a line drive off her leg midway through the outing. She tossed seven innings with eleven hits, seven runs, and six earned with seven strikeouts.Â
Up next for Union will be the GSC opener this weekend on the road at Shorter University February 18-19.
