JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team posted its first win of the 2023 season with a 3-0 shutout victory over Harding University. Union improved to 1-2 on the season, while Harding dropped to 0-2-1.Â
The win for Union also marked the first of
Josh Alford's career as head coach.Â
"The team is still pretty new to me, new players coming in, but I think it is the preparation," Alford said. "They are buying in every day, and I think today you saw some of our preparation finally come out and get some goals from it."Â
Union ended a nearly scoreless first half with a goal from
Shaylynn Bentley in the 42nd minute of play, assisted by
Madison Woolridge. Union led 1-0 at the half. Then late in the second half, Union got an insurance goal from
Holly Trisdale in the 80th minute, assisted by
Sophie Walsh. A third goal was added just six minutes later when
Ines Gama scored, assisted by Kaitlin Osorio-Mendez.Â
Union outshot Harding 11-9 in the game and 6-4 in shots on goal. Corner kicks were in favor of Harding, 5-3 and Harding also led in fouls, 6-5.Â
Walsh, Trisdale, Gama and
Lilly Ludwig all had two shots each to lead Union.
Rylee Iorio recorded her first shutout of the season, playing all 90 minutes in goal, and tallying four saves.Â
Up next for Union will be its Gulf South Conference opener, Friday, September 9 at 5 p.m. versus Lee University. It will be the fourth straight home game for Union to open the season.Â
