Union volleyball tops West Georgia 3-1 for seventh straight win

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-1 (25-17, 20-25, 26-24, 25-17) win at the University of West Georgia Saturday afternoon. Union improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Georgia dropped to 9-8 on the season and 2-3 in league play. 
The win for Union pushed its winning streak to seven games. The seven straight wins set a record for longest winning streak for volleyball since joining division II in 2012. It is the longest winning streak since Union volleyball won 10 straight matches in 2010 will still members of the NAIA. The record for consecutive wins in program history is 22 in 1999. 
Union's 5-0 start in GSC play is the best start and most consecutive GSC wins since joining the league in 2012.
Union head coach Stephen Vick said, "Any road win in the GSC is a good win and for us to string two in a row together makes it that much better. The girls are playing gritty. When we get down they focus in on a single point and when they get up they do not let up. They battle for every tough, dig, or block. They are looking for more and wanting to get better every day."

In today's win, Union hit .216 in the match and led in kills, 53-42. Union dominated the next, leading in blocks, 15-5, and also led in assists, 43-38, and digs, 76-65. West Georgia doubled up Union is aces, 12-6. 
 Union was led by Emily Grace Calhoon with 13 kills, while Alyssa Tatsch and Reese Owens added nine each. Davey Slaughter led with three aces, Sidney Hegg with nine blocks, Jordan Vick with 41 assists, and Sydney Sample with 22 digs. Tatch added 13 digs. Vick recorded her second straight double-double and ninth on the season. 
Up next for Union will be a home match versus Mississippi College, Saturday, October 1 at 2 p.m. Mississippi College topped Union earlier in the season 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) at Union in a non-conference matchup. MC is coming off a win over nationally ranked and previous GSC unbeaten West Florida today, 3-2.
