JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 6-2 win over Shorter University at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union improved to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 3-2 on the season and 0-2 in league play.Â
Union started the scoring early when
Stan De Vries intercepted a mishit goal kick from the Shorter goalie and lofted a shot over the keeper's head for the first score in the fifth minute. It was just 24 minutes later when De Vries scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Mats Fredricksen and Chris Gill.Â
Shorter responded late in the first half in the 43rd minute on a goal by Mattia Maiello. The score was 2-1 at the half. Shorter tied the match just four minutes into the second half with Maiello scored again for the Hawks.Â
In the 55th minute, Union took the lead for good on a goal from
Alexander Lapkalo for the game winner.
Manayeh Linton scored in the 67th minute, assisted by
Ostian Bowen and
Billy Grogan. Bowen scored in the 85th minute, assisted by
Kenny Nitzsche.
Alpay Altuntas capped the scoring in the 90th minute.Â
Ostian led Union with three shots as the Bulldogs outshot Shorter 21-10 in the game, including 10-4 in shots on goal.Â
Union's
Botond Nemeth played all 90 minutes in goal, recording two saves.Â
