HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 66-56 win at the University of Alabama Huntsville Monday night. Union improved to 17-2 overall and a league best 12-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Alabama Huntsville dropped to 3-15 on the season and 2-11 in league play.Â
This game was a makeup game from a postponed contest back on January 15.Â
Union is ranked No. 11 in the WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 7 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
Union led by seven entering the fourth quarter and following a 3-ponter with 6:24 left, cut Union's led to just six, 56-50. The two teams swapped baskets and Union led by six again, 58-52 with 5:45 left. Union's
Shanique Lucas went on a personal 5-0 run including a 3-pointer to put Union back up by double figures, 63-52. That was the last field goal made by Union, however, the Lady Bulldogs sank three free throws down the stretch to seal the 10-point win.Â
Union led 19-12 after the first quarter and extended its lead to 31-23 at the half.Â
The third quarter was good for Union, shooting 54 percent from the field and 40 percent (2-5) from 3-point range. However, Union could not pull away as UAH was on fire in the third quarter. UAH shot 54 percent from the field and 80 percent (4-5) from 3-point range. UAH outscored Union 22-21 in the third. It was the only quarter Union was outscored.Â
Union's largest lead of the night was 42-26 at the 5:05 mark of the third quarter.Â
Union was led by Lucas with a game-high 18 points.
Jaelencia Williams added 13 points and eight rebounds.
Ashtyn Baker posted a full stat line with 11 points, a game-high nine rebounds and five steals. Union shot 42 percent from the field, 30 percent (6-20) from 3-point range, and 67 percent (20-30) from the free throw line.Â
Alabama Huntsville was led by Mann with 16 points and Taylor with 11 points. The Chargers shot 40 percent from the field, 47 percent (8-17) from long range, and 67 percent (8-12) from the free throw line.Â
