JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team defeated the University of West Alabama 90-51 Saturday afternoon in the final regular season home game at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 21-2 overall and a league best 16-0 in the Gulf South Conference. West Alabama dropped to 15-9 on the season and 9-7 in league play.Â
Union is ranked No. 5 in the most recent WBCA Coaches' Poll and D2SIDA Media Poll, while also hold the No. 1 spot in this week's NCAA Regional Rankings.Â
Union moved its overall winning streak to 18 straight games, its home court winning streak to 18 games, and its GSC winning streak to 16 games.Â
Union now needs just one more win or a Valdosta State loss to clinch the regular season title.Â
Union opened the game with a Bethan Dillard 3-pointer and never looked back. Union led 23-14 at the end of the first quarter.Â
West Alabama kept it under 10 points for a while, but a couple of
Samariah Thompson free throws gave Union a 30-20 lead with 4:49 left in the second quarter. From the time Union led 25-20 with 7:06 left in the quarter, the Lady Bulldog outscored West Alabama 17-4 to pull away. Union led 42-24 at the half.Â
Union extended its lead to 29 points, 70-41 by the end of the third quarter. Union's 39 point advantage at the end of the game was the largest lead, 90-51.Â
Union was led by one of the three seniors recognized prior to the game with 19 points.
Shanique Lucas added 17 points and
Bethany Dillard scored 16 points. The two other seniors,
Emily Beard Dunnagan and
Ashtyn Baker added eight points each. Union shot 62 percent from the field, 53 percent (11-21) from long range, and 81 percent (17-21) from the free throw line.Â
West Alabama was led by Tazsa Garrett-Hammett with 18 points and Bria Dent with 12 points. The Tigers shot 43 percent from the field, 27 percent (3-11), and 73 percent (8-11) from the free throw line.Â
