ROME, Ga. - The Union University women's basketball posted a 74-48 win at Shorter University Thursday evening. Union improved to 22-2 overall and a league best 17-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 5-16 on the season and 2-15 in league play.Â
The win for Union clinched the GSC Regular Season title and the No. 1 seed in next week's GSC Tournament. For Union, this is the 35th regular season conference title in program history. It is the eighth GSC Regular Season title and fifth straight for the Lady Bulldogs since joining the league in 2012-13.
Union is ranked No. 1 in the second NCAA Regional Ranking. Union is also No. 3 in this week's WBCA Coaches' Poll and No. 4 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
Union's win over Shorter moved the overall winning streak to 19 games and its GSC regular season winning streak to 17 games. It was Union's seventh straight win on the road.Â
Union jumped out early with a 23-11 lead at the end of the first quarter. Union won the second quarter 18-12 to lead 41-23 at the half. Union edged Shorter 16-15 in the third quarter but added to its lead with a 17-10 fourth quarter to get the 74-48 win.Â
Union's largest lead of the night was 31 points, 74-43 with just over a minute left to play.Â
Ten players scored in the game for Union with three in double figures.
Shanique Lucas led with 15 points.
Emily Beard Dunnagan added 13 points including 3-of-5 shooting from 3-point range.
Jaelencia Williams added 10 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.
Bethany Dillard and Leah Cable each hit a couple 3-pointers in the win. Union shot 55 percent from the field, 48 percent (10-21) from long range, and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.Â
Shorter was led by Lewis with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Only four players scored in the game for the Lady Hawks. Shorter shot 38 percent from the field, seven percent (1-15) from 3-point range, and 61 percent (11-18) from the free throw line.Â
