Union drops both games in day two of Columbus State Cougar Classic

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Union University softball drops both games in day two at the Columbus State University Cougar Classic. Union lost their first game to Coker University 8-3 and lost their second game to the host team, Columbus state 6-0. Union is now 2-6 on the season, while Coker University improved to 4-4 and Columbus State improved to 4-4.
 
In the first game of the day against Coker University, Coker came out first and scored in the second inning. In the top of the fifth inning Coker would plate two more widening their lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth is when Union's bats woke up, Alyssa Ward would hit a single to drive in Harley Bartholomew plating their first run of the game. Union's Fallon Groves would then single to right field scoring two more tying the game up 3-3 at the end of the fifth inning. That would be the end of the scoring for Union as Coker would go one to add five more in the sixth to make the final score of 8-3. Olivia Baker started in the circle for Union, she threw 4.2 innings notching five strikeouts, giving up 5 runs, allowing seven hits and walking one. Kira Finkley and Carli Rice came in to pitch in relief. Finkley threw 1.1 innings getting two strikeouts, giving up one run, allowing three hits. Rice threw 1.0 innings allowing two hits, two walks, and giving up one run.
 
The second game was much of a pitcher's battle until late. Columbus state plated one run in the second inning. It wasn't until the sixth inning when Columbus state plated five more runs to make the final score 6-0. Reese Taylor started in the circle for Union throwing 5.2 innings, notching three strikeouts, giving up six hits, six runs, and three walks. Kira Finkley came into pitch throwing 0.1 innings allowing only one hit.
 
Up next for Union is the opening up of conference play as the lady flames of Lee University come to town for a three game home series. The first game will take place Saturday, February 19 at 1:00 p.m. at Fesmire Softball Field.
