JACKSON, Tenn. – The Union University men's basketball team came away with the win against Mississippi College 87-63 Saturday night at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union improved to 19-5 on the season and 13-3 in the Gulf South Conference. Mississippi College dropped to 5-16 overall and 3-12 in league play.
This was the second matchup between these two teams. Union completed the season sweep against the Choctaws as Union defeated Mississippi College in Clinton back in the middle of December.
Union is ranked No. 22 in this week's NABC Coaches' Poll and No. 23 in the D2SIDA Media Poll.
Hunter Vick got the Bulldogs rolling early as he knocked down a mid-range jumper. Early in the first half, it seemed like the Union could not miss going on a 15-2 run in the first six minutes of play. Mississippi College slowly got their offense going to start chipping away at the lead. Halfway through the first half, Antonio Cowart Jr. from Mississippi College found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc to cut Union's lead down to just seven points. Union stretched its lead to 10 points, 44-34 at halftime.
The second half opened up much like that of the first as
Hunter Vick scored the first points of the half as he rattled one in from beyond the arc. Union controlled the second half leading by 15 at the halfway mark.
Tyree Boykin broke the game open late in the second half as he found the bottom of the net from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs went on a 15-6 run with seven minutes left ending the game with a final score of 87-63. The Bulldogs' biggest lead of the game was 26 points.
Union was led by
Tyree Boykin with 18 points. Vick added 17 and was 4-5 from beyond the arc.
Jeremiah Littlepage led Union with seven rebounds.
Boe Nguidjol added six boards.
Dusan Djordjevic scored a season-high of 10 points and also added five rebounds. Union shot 60% from the field (35-58), 46% from beyond the arc (13-28), and 36% (4-11) from the charity stripe.
Mississippi College was led by Miles Miller with 20 points. Judah Jordan added 16 and Cowart Jr. would go on to add 15 of his own. Miller also led his team in rebounds with five and both Cowart Jr. would add four. The Choctaws shot 41% from the field (24-59), 32% from beyond the arc (9-28), and 86% (6-7) from the line.
