MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball team posted a 63-53 win at Christian Brothers University Friday night. Union, ranked No. 4 in the WBCA poll and No. 6 in the D2SIDA Media poll, improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Christian Brothers dropped to 3-4 on the season and 1-3 in league play.Â
Union started hot with a pair of 3-pointers from
Shanique Lucas and
Samariah Thompson to lead 6-0. However, CBU outscored Union 21-8 over the rest of the quarter to take the early advantage. Union responded to outscore the Lady Bucs 19-13 in the second quarter but trailed 34-33 at the break.Â
In the second half, again, Union came out of the locker room on fire, scoring 12 straight points to lead 45-34 with 6:44 left in the period. The run was started by another three from Thompson and capped by a three pointer from
Leah Cauble. And again, CBU rallied back and outscored Union 16-6, cutting the deficit to just one, 51-50.Â
In the fourth quarter, low scoring as it was, it belonged to Union. Thompson scored first to give Union a 3-point cushion at the 8:40 mark. CBU did not score in the fourth quarter until a free throw with 4:57 left to play. CBU's only field goal in the final quarter came with 1:34 left, but Union had already pushed its lead to eight points following back-to-back 3-pointers from
Bethany Dillard.
Shanique Lucas has two free throws and a layup in the final minute to seal the 10-point win.Â
Union was led by
Shanique Lucas with 13 points, Dillard with 10 points, and Thompson with nine points. Eleven players scored in the game for Union. Union struggled from the field at 38 percent, 29 percent (8-28) from 3-point range, and 50 percent (7-14) from the free throw line.Â
Union forced 23 turnovers and scored 22 points off those turnovers. Union outrebounded CBU 37-31.Â
Christian Brothers was led by Selena Pruitt with 19 points and Yaya Coleman with 13 points. The Lady Bucs shot 49 percent from the field, 10 percent (1-10) from 3-point range, and 60 percent (6-10) from the foul line.Â
