Union volleyball finishes best GSC regular season in program history with 3-0 win at Lee

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - The Union University volleyball team posted a 3-0 sweep (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) at Lee University Friday night. Union improved to 21-9 overall and a program best 14-2 in the Gulf South Conference. Lee ended its season at 8-24 on the year and 5-11 in league play. 
Union had already clinched the No. 2 seed in next week's GSC Tournament. The 2-seed is the highest seed for Union volleyball since joining the GSC in 2012. Union's previous best was a pair of 3-seeds. This is Union's fourth trip to the GSC Tournament, all consecutive. In addition, The 21 wins is the most regular season wins for a Union volleyball team since joining the league, while the nine losses are the fewest since in a regular season in the D2 era. The 14-2 GSC record is the best for Union since joining the lead. The previous best was 12-4 in 2019. 
Lee opened the match on fire at home in their final match of the season, jumping out to an 11-4 lead. Union chipped away and pulled to within one point at 16-15. Lee scored again to make it 17-15 and that was the final point for Lee in the set. Union closed the set on a 10-0 run to win 25-17. 
In the second set, Lee scored first, but Union rattled off seven straight points to lead 7-1 and never looked back. Union did not trail in the remainder of the second or the entire third set. 
Union hit .250 in the match, while Lee hit .145. Union led in kills (44-33), aces (10-4), blocks (8-5), assists (42-30), and digs (64-57).
Sidney Hegg led Union with 11 kills and four blocks. Emily Grace Calhoon also added 11 kills and Alyssa Tatsch had 10 kills. Tatsch led with four aces and Jordan Vick with 36 assists. Davey Slaughter led with 17 digs, while Sydney Sample (15), and Vick (10) had double figure digs also. 
Up next for Union will be the GSC Tournament. The top two seeds earn double-byes in the tournament which means Union does not play until the semifinals, Saturday, November 12 at 1:30 p.m. versus the winner of match four. Keep up with the schedule at www.uuathletics.com.  -UNION-
