JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's basketball posted a 77-51 win over Delta State University Saturday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium/David Blackstock Court. Union, ranked No. 4 in the WBCA and No. 7 in the D2SIDA national polls, improved to 2-0 overall and 2-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Delta State dropped to 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in league play.Â
Union opened the game with six straight points but found themselves down by one point, 16-15, at the end of the first quarter. In the second quarter, Union took control, outscoring Delta State 21-12 to lead 36-28 at the half.
Union maintained that momentum from the second quarter as the Lady Bulldogs outscored DSU 20-10 in the third quarter and scored 21 more points in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.Â
Union forced 22 turnovers and scored 35 points off of those turnovers. Union also scored 34 points in the paint and won the second chance point battle 17-6. Delta outrebounded Union 32-31 while Union won the offensive rebound battle 14-10.Â
Union was led by
Shanique Lucas with 16 points and
Samariah Thompson with 12 points. All 13 players for Union scored in the context. Union shot 41 percent from the field, 22 percent (6-27) from 3-point range, and 75 percent (21-28) from the free throw line.Â
Delta State was led by Camryn Davis with 14 points and Alanna Smith with 10 points. The Lady Statesmen shot 43 percent from the field, 20 percent (1-5) from long range, and 89 percent (8-9) from the free throw line.Â
Up next for Union will be a third straight home GSC game to start the season, Saturday, November 26 at 2 p.m.
