JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University women's soccer team topped Valdosta State University 1-0 Friday night at Smith Memorial Soccer Complex. Union improved to 4-8 overall and 3-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Valdosta State dropped to 3-8-1 on the season and 2-6 in league play.Â
The win keeps Union within grasp of one of the final spots in the GSC Tournament. Union is currently ninth and the top-8 teams advance to the GSC Tournament.Â
Sylvana Kempka broke a scoreless tie in the 65th minute when she took a cross and from straight on, found the back of the net.

Ava Duval were credited with the assists on the goal. Union had a near goal in the half with shot just over a charging goalie went just wide.Â
Union held off an aggressive Valdosta State team that outshot 19-8 overall and 9-5 in shots on goal. VSU also missed a couple close shots that went just wide.Â
Rylie Iorio recorded nine saves in the match, playing all 90 minutes.Â
Corner kicks were 6-5 in favor of VSU, while the Blazers also led in fouls, 8-7.Â
Eight players for Union recorded one shots each in the match.Â
Up next for Union will be its next to last home match, a meeting with West Georgia October 9 at 1 p.m.
