JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team rallied for a 2-1 overtime win over Harding University at Smith Soccer Complex Saturday evening. Union, ranked No. 16 in the national rankings, moved to 2-0 on the year, while Harding dropped to 1-1.Â
Union head coach
Steven Cox said, "It was great to get a result tonight. The guys showed a lot of passion and fight in the second half and OT. We did not execute our principles as well as we needed to and made the game difficult for ourselves. We need to learn from this game and be ready to prepare for a good Trevecca Nazarene team next week."
Harding scored first in the 71st minute of play on a goal from Andres Castano. Union tied the match just 13 minutes later on a goal from Stan De Vries, assisted by Davis Mungomba. Regulation ended with the 1-1 tie.Â
In overtime, Union went the length of the field as
David Hurtado took the ball at midfield. He sprinted down the middle then found
William Valencia to the left. Valencia then played a perfect ball into the box where Hurtado connected with a shot into the back of the net for the golden goal.Â
Union outshot Harding 19-11 in the match, including 10-3 in shots on goal. Union was also better in corner kicks, 10-3.Â
In a very physical match, Union had 14 fouls to nine from Harding. Eight total yellow cards in the match, with Harding getting five.Â
Botond Nemeth recorded two saves in 92 minutes of play.
Justin Fisher played three minutes in goal during the second half in a brief relief. Nemeth re-entered and finished the match.
Gavin Scott and Valencia led Union with five shots each, with three of Velencia's shots being on goal to lead the team.Â
Up next for Union is a road match at Trevecca Nazarene University, Wednesday, September 8 at 7 p.m.Â
