Union men's soccer drops home match to Montevallo, 2-0

JACKSON, Tenn. - The Union University men's soccer team lost at home, 2-0, to the University of Montevallo. Union, ranked No. 24 in the national rankings, dropped to 4-2-2 overall and 1-2-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Montevallo improved to 6-1-1 on the season and 3-1-1 in league play. 

After starting the season 3-0, and extending its winning streak to eight matches dating back to last season, Union climbed all the way to No. 8 in the national ranking. The ranking was the highest in Union men's soccer history. However, in the last five matches, Union has gone 1-2-2. 

Montevallo scored its first goal late in the first half when Sam Mitchell scored on an assist from Edin Hernandez in the 39th minute. The 1-0 halftime scored stood for most of the second half until Montevallo added insurance with a goal in the 74th minute. Martin Chladek, assisted by Hernandez' second assist of the game. 

Union had trouble getting good shots, being out shot in the match 22-7 overall and 10-3 in shots on goal. 

Gavin Scott led the way with three shots for Union. Botond Nemeth recorded eight saves in his 90 minutes of work in goal. 

Up next for Union will be a pair of road GSC matches, October 1 at West Florida, and October 3 at Spring Hill.
