ROME, Ga. - The Union University women's soccer team posted its first victory of the season, 1-0 at Shorter University. Union improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
The win also marked Interim Head Coach
Anna Hardin's first win as a head coach.
Coach Hardin said, "Despite the rainy conditions today, our girls were able to execute our plan. We had many great chances in front of the goal today. Annika's strike was the one that found the back of the net. The team did a good job today setting up one another for success. I am very proud of the progress we made as a team this weekend. We are ready to get back to work and start preparing for our first home game."
The match's lone goal came from Union's
Annika Weidner in the 32nd minute of play. Union dominated the first half, outshooting Shorter 12-1. Both teams managed four shots each in the second half. Union won the shots on goal category 7-1.
Weidner led Union with five shots, while
Claire Maxon added four shots. Six different Union players recorded a shot on goal.
Bryson Lee and
Rylee Iorio split time in goal with Bryson recording Union's only save.
Up next for Union will be its first home games of the season, a pair of GSC matches. Union hosts Auburn Montgomery Friday, September 24, following by Montevallo two days later.
