ROME, Ga. - The Union University men's soccer team posted a 4-3 double overtime win at Shorter University. Union improved to 4-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in the Gulf South Conference. Shorter dropped to 2-3 on the season and 0-2 in league play.
This marked the third straight overtime game for Union and fourth of the season in six matches. Union is 2-1-1 in overtime games this year.
Gavin Scott scored the final three goals for Union, including the golden goal in the 102nd minute.
Union's
William Valencia put Union on top first in the 11th minute of play, sparking a back-and-forth battle for the match. Shorter answered with a goal in the 35th minute to tie the match. That 1-1 score stood at the half.
Scott scored his first goal in the 50th minute, but Shorter tied the game just four minutes later. Then, in the 60th minute, Scott again gave Union the lad with is second goal of the match. However, Shorter tied the match at 3-3 with its final goal in the 80th minute.
Union led Shorter 20-15 in total shots, while both teams recorded eight shots on goal. Union led 10-3 in corner kicks and fouls, 14-8.
David Hurtado and Scott both recorded five shots in the match to lead Union.
Botond Nemeth played the entire 101-plus minutes of the match in goal, recorded five saves.
Up next for Union will be its first home games of the season, a pair of GSC matches. Union hosts Auburn Montgomery Friday, September 24, following by Montevallo two days later.
